Fifth-placed Villarreal travel to the unpredictable Betis on the back of
five wins and a draw from their last six matches. ‘El Submarino’ are
putting continued pressure on Real Madrid in the battle for fourth place
at the moment - can they make a serious challenge?
Nothing is ever straightforward with Betis, who at one point this season
executed a perfect away win against Real Madrid, winning 1-0 after a
brilliant tactical and passionate display. However, In their next away
match, they shipped four goals at Real Sociedad in a 4-4 draw!
Speaking of goals, Betis usually deliver. Despite their position in the
table (13th), only five teams have scored more - and only Deportivo la
Coruña have conceded more! In total, Betis’ games this season average an
incredible 3.8 goals!
To stem the tide of conceded goals, Betis have signed a big name this
transfer window in Spanish international Marc Bartra. The experienced
defender tried to comfort the Betis fans from the get-go, stating “I’m
coming to help”, in his first press conference.
Players to watch: Villarreal will look to their experienced striker
Carlos Bacca (six goals, four assists) to deliver the goods after
recently losing their star striker Cedric Bakambu earlier in January (a
free agent, awaiting a big-money move to the Chinese Super League).
In Antonio Sanabria’s absence (knee injury), Sergio Leon has been the
one to watch for Betis. He has seven goals to his name this season and
scored in the reverse fixture earlier this season.
Stat attack: Betis’ last four results in the league are 5-3, 3-2, 0-5
and 2-3 and they have seen over 4.5 goals on seven occasions already
The reverse fixture this season ended 3-1 to Villarreal, but the six
matches between the teams before that ended under 2.5 goals.
Betis have scored 2+ goals in nine out of 11 home games this season.
Villarreal have kept a clean sheet in four away games this season and
have won 1-0 in their last three.
